Designer Ruth Suarez: Beautiful Accessories

The multitalented textile artist, Ruth Suarez, is excited about her new product for this season. “I obtained some wonderful leather in Leon this summer,” said Ruth.  “I’m very pleased with the new styles of ladies’ handbags I’ve added.” Besides her ready-made items, Ruth specializes in custom orders: “Tell me your idea for the perfect purse,” she explains with enthusiasm, “and I can turn your dream into reality.”  

Ruth began making leather products about 13 years ago. Over the years, she has challenged herself to make leather items that match her imagination, creating original leather clothing and accessories. RTHco leather products are prized for their quality and style. Because all of Ruth’s leather goods are handmade and original designs, they make terrific gifts!

Born in Mexico City, Ruth worked at several occupations before relocating to La Penita six years ago. “I find the ocean and the entire area so beautiful, it stimulates my artist’s nature,” says Ruth in fluent English.  Her two grown children and her extended family live in central Mexico. All of her family is proud that Ruth is striking out to achieve her dream of creating a fulltime textiles and leather business. “I had long hoped to be able to work at something I loved doing, and now, in La Penita, I am turning my lifelong sewing hobby into a business-and I’m the boss!” Ruth said with a laugh.  “I have always loved the color and feel of fabrics. Ever since I was a little girl I was sewing for clothes for myself whenever I had any free time” said this petite craftsman. Many area residents first became aware of Ruth’s talent with a sewing machine and her creative eye when Ruth was one of the clothes designers for the Women to Women Fashion Shows in 2007-09.  Her haute couture original women’s outfits illustrate another type of Ruth’s creative talent.

 Combining talent with personality produces a Ruth Suarez masterpiece: a unique textile design.  Ruth’s pride and enthusiasm for her work is evident in the top quality of the finished product. In addition to Ruth’s original leather bags and purses, she is in demand for her made-to-order home décor work, such as creating custom drapes, slipcovers, bedspreads. Ruth has the rare gift of being able to conceptualize beauty in raw materials; “I spread out the fabric or leather and I get a feel for a particular shape or design.”  She says that it is the characteristics of the piece of material that guide her to a particular shape of purse or clothing.

What Ruth enjoys most is to see the smiles on customer’s faces when she delivers a completed commission.  “I am so happy to have satisfied their needs.  It is always so rewarding to see the impact of the new drapes or slipcovers in the home- to see how my sewn items will enhance her lifestyle.”   For people wanting curtains, drapes, or upholstery, Ruth will come to your home for custom measurements and quotes.  While Ruth does not carry fabric at her studio, if the customer doesn’t already have a particular pattern in mind, she will go with the customer to Tepic or Puerto Vallarta to assist with the fabric selection.  As a decorator, Ruth will interview the customer as to preferences in color, texture, function and theme before making design recommendations. In addition to Ruth’s savvy fashion sense, she has a reputation for completing work on time- a real rarity in Mexico. If she says it will be delivered in two weeks, it is. Ruth has a long list of satisfied customers that “remain friends long after the work is complete.”
