"We will begin this week to print out one issue a week and over the next month or so have most of the sections available at these restaurants. Sections such as Accommodation, Real Estate, Dining Out etc."

La Casa de los Niños - Help for Local Kids in Lo de Marcos

Dulce, Pati, David, and Jim opened La Casa de los Niños in fall 2005, with the idea of providing someplace where the kids could go to study, get help with their homework, maybe take English classes, learn about their culture and the environment.

They met several times to outline our goals and strategies; contacted friends, acquaintances and relatives to ask for donations of books and materials.

The response was immediate and gratifying. Even people we didn't know came forward to volunteer, to donate books to our small library, to offer services and help. During the first week they received a television, bilingual dictionaries, buckets of paint, a ceiling fan; others promised help with the electrical installations and the plumbing; others brought children's books, crayons, pencils and games; students from the high school offered to be tutors; natives of the United States and Canada volunteered to teach English.

Everyone was so enthusiastic! With about a dozen volunteers and more than 20 kids, they spent three weeks cleaning, fixing and painting. Before they had even opened the doors, 94 kids had registered to take English classes!

La Casa de los Niños continues providing a much-needed children's center in Lo de Marcos.  Besides the original beginning English classes, they have expanded the curriculum to include special classes (such as yoga, dance and cooking), reading and environmental awareness programs and many types of crafts projects.

All classes and projects are taught by volunteers and are funded by donations.  They are completely free for the kids.

As more and more people head south once again this year, it would be a great if they could help out the local kids by bringing a few little things with them to donate to La Casa de los Niños. Any kind of craft materials, beginning readers (Spanish and/or English), toys, appropriate CDs and VCR tapes (cartoons, kids' shows, language learning) will be put to good use and much appreciated.

And, of course, if anyone would like to make a cash contribution, that would help with the rent and utilities expenses.

For more information about La Casa de los Niños and the kids, please visit the web site at http://lacasadelosninos.org.
