The response was immediate and gratifying. Even people we didn't know came forward to volunteer, to donate books to our small library, to offer services and help. During the first week they received a television, bilingual dictionaries, buckets of paint, a ceiling fan; others promised help with the electrical installations and the plumbing; others brought children's books, crayons, pencils and games; students from the high school offered to be tutors; natives of the United States and Canada volunteered to teach English.
La Casa de los Niños continues providing a much-needed children's center in Lo de Marcos. Besides the original beginning English classes, they have expanded the curriculum to include special classes (such as yoga, dance and cooking), reading and environmental awareness programs and many types of crafts projects. All classes and projects are taught by volunteers and are funded by donations. They are completely free for the kids.
And, of course, if anyone would like to make a cash contribution, that would help with the rent and utilities expenses. For more information about La Casa de los Niños and the kids, please visit the web site at http://lacasadelosninos.org.
