Semana Santa- Mexico Celebrates Spring to Hit the Beach

ŠTara A. Spears

Description: beach spring.jpg

Just when the majority of snow birds and international winter visitors have journeyed home to northern climes and  the beachside villages return to a sleepy pace, the Riviera Nayarit rebounds with the energy of the national two week Easter holiday season. Holy week, Semana santa, and the week after Easter, Pascura, which is April 17-30 this year, brings thousands of families from all over Mexico to enjoy the Jaltemba Bay beach.

April tends to be a hot and dry time of the year throughout Mexico, making the beach a magnet for those wanting to escape the city.  The area goes into party mode: exuberant children and adults fill the beaches to bursting, crowds dance along the clogged streets to strolling musicians and celebrate with fireworks, traditional foods and lots of beer! No one can out do the Mexicans for enjoying life with impromptu fiestas for fun-in-the-sun. As with so many of its delightful customs, Mexico originally started Semana Santa as a solemn religious occasion from the Spanish liturgical calendar but added a spirited Mexican interpretation that celebrates spring and renewal. While many parts of Mexico observe the holiday with passion plays and processions, the more secular west coast area is a feast of popular cuisine. Thirsty revelers guzzle aguas frescas- water flavored with local tropical fruits or coconut, vast quantities of tequila and beer; and the abacoa and cerviche tacos from the roving vendors are in high demand.  Holy week is the traditional start of Mexico’s ice cream season: pushcarts that are loaded with tubs of ice cream or the popular fresh fruit ice bars on a stick, called paletas, roam the beaches and village streets calling out “nievees”. Vendors also sell snow cone-like shaved ices known as raspados. The dulces regionales-candies made from coconut, tamarind and other regional ingredients- are sold by industrious vendors trudging with wheelbarrows through the sand.

Highlights from the March 28 Meeting of Los Amigos de La Peńita

It was noted that the discussion paper on a new governance model was posted on our website in both languages and that comments are being sought from members. The general meeting scheduled for April 11 would be replaced with the first meeting of the new Management Council which would be composed of the members of the current Executive and all Committee Chairs. All members are welcome to attend. The meeting will focus on two issues: a discussion on the proposed new governance model and a discussion on fundraising for next year.

A motion that Los Amigos, in partnership with Se Mas, make microloans available to the citizens of our community subject to the availability of sufficient funds and that Se Mas administer the program, provide training and account for the loan funds was unanimously approved. It was noted that approval of the motion will not impact the budgets for other committees, since we are looking at getting funds from other organizations or from a specific fundraising initiative to support this program.

A presentation was given on the budget that the Executive was recommending for the 2011/12 fiscal year. A motion to accept the budget, as proposed was unanimously approved. The approved budgets by Committee are as follows – amounts in pesos:
Recycling $ 69,983
Education $226,700
JEDI ($ 12,200)
Tianguis ($ 55,500)
Scholarships $107,000
Executive Committee $ 52,850
Reserve for Community Projects $ 50,000
Contingency $ 32,203
Total $471,036
It was noted that, for a number of the Committees, funding is also being sought from other sources.

Deb Drew advised the group that she is having her third year interior design students continue to work on potential community cultural centre designs in the next term. She indicated that members could follow this work on the Facebook Page: LaPenita CommunityCenter.

It was noted that Los Amigos had accomplished a lot over the past year and received a lot of praise and Ken Snyder thanked everyone for their hard work in making this another successful year. Ken Snyder and the other members of the Executive Committee were given a round of applause.

Full Minutes are available on the Los Amigos Website (www.losamigosdelapenita.com).
The Minutes include a full breakdown of the approved budget for 2011/12.

Herald of Tropical Spring: Primavera Trees in Bloom

ŠTara A. Spears

Description: Description: prima pink closeup.jpg     Description: Description: prim yellow closeup.jpg

One criticism that I hear from northern latitude folks is that the tropics don’t have seasonal changes- not true. Presently in the Riviera Nayarit we are rewarded with the gorgeous riot of pink and yellow blooms on the primavera trees, members of the Bignoniaceae and Tabebuia families. The clusters of flowers are in stark contrast with the bare branches that will leaf out after the blooming finishes, usually in the rainy season. These tropical trees originate in South America where it is the national flower for Brazil and Venezuela. Primavera is a large rainforest canopy tree, sometimes reaching to 100 feet (30 m) in the natural rainforest, with a straight clear bole up to 3 or 4 feet in diameter. It has relatively smooth whitish bark and showy pink or yellow flowers in large panicles-clusters. Primavera is often considered the bat-flower family because many of the plants have large showy flowers that are pollinated by bats. To read the entire story click here

BIG THANKS

BIG THANKS to Tom Hopper (L) and Paul Leger (R) from the community (and especially from  Lin Chimes) for the contribution to JBAR.

Hopper and Leger contributed a portion of their profits from the delicious Sunday Brunch Breakfast at Tiffany's held at their Bed and Breakfast "El Panorama" on the hill in La Penita.

The Bunch raised 1964 pesos for JBAR.

WE DID IT!

Our goal for the spring of 2011 was to reach $5,000 worth of donations in order to help fund clinics in the Jaltemba Bay Area and also Lo de Marcos in April and November. We have reached a total of $5,756.00!

YEAH!  Thanks again to all those who have donated in any way:  money, donations, and time!

Our annual budget requires approximately $10,000 per year.  The two or three clinics cost us approximately $5,000 each year.  Our work outside the clinic is on-going all year long and requires approximately another $5,000 which helps us cover medical expenses, vaccinations,  sterilizing, adoptions, health certificates, dog and cat food through out the year.  We cover expenses for anyone who cannot afford medical expenses for their animals and also for anyone who brings in an animal in need.  All medical expenses are covered!

Please keep helping us out!!

Many thanks to the following people who have added to our funds through their donations!

Mexico Not Changing Clocks Until April 3

http://www.banderasnews.com/1103/images/dst2011.jpg

In Mexico we won't be setting our clocks forward until the first Sunday of April.

While Americans will be turning their clocks ahead for daylight-saving time on Sunday, March 13, 2010, for most of Mexico, daylight saving time does not begin until 2:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, April 3rd. So make a note if you'll be traveling to Mexico this month - there will be an extra hour difference in time.

Daylight Saving Time in the United States

Daylight Savings Time begins in the United States on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. So this Sunday, March 13, 2011, US clocks will be set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time.

Daylight Saving Time in Mexico

In most of Mexico, Daylight Saving Time is known as Horario de Verano (summer schedule). It has been observed since 1996 throughout most of the country.

Until April of 2010, the state of Nayarit was one hour earlier than Puerto Vallarta and the state of Jalisco. Before that, many tourist related businesses in Nayarit around Banderas Bay would set their clocks to Puerto Vallarta time to prevent confusion. On April 4, 2010, Nayarit initiated a 2 hour time change to coincide with Jalisco.

Therefore, in both states on April 3, 2011, the clocks will be turned forward 1 hour from 2:00 am to 3:00 am. Daylight Saving Time will end on Sunday, October 30, 2011.

Warm climate gardening tips

The ultimate lazy gardener’s plant is the caladium. It is almost unparalleled for its distinctive foliage that flashes green, white, red, and pink in mottled, veined or striped patterns. The large arrow-shaped, paper thin leaves are stunning in a flower bed or as accents in pots. Grown as an annual in climates that have frost, they are evergreen here in the tropics. A tuberous plant that loves heat and humidity, the one pictured in the blue pot has thrived for four years of non-stop blooming on my covered patio.  Caladiums are native to the Amazon River area of Brazil.....GO TO PAGE 4 Homes, Living & Real Estate for complete article

It's a WRAP!

Seasons nears an end with big beach party by Val and Chris

Well, it seems that the season is winding down. Val and Chris brought a lot of friends together for their block party on the beach, some who are leaving within the next week and some who stayed a couple of extra days just so they could they could be there. They had a great time reminiscing, talking about next year and inviting friends to their summer homes. There was volley ball, beach golf, horse back riding up and down the beach and dancing in the street, or where ever they happened to be. There was more food than at a Las Vegas buffet.   Thank you, Val and Chris

Val and Chris want to thank everybody for coming. They said it wouldn't have been a party without you.
