The Good, The Bad and the Opportunity in Mexico

55 out of 128 isn’t the best…but it isn’t the worst, either. That’s Mexico’s ranking in Forbes latest list of the best countries for business. It’s not in the top ten, but it’s a higher ranking than Brazil, or China. There were reasons for the country's score: notable improvements in innovation, monetary freedom and tax burdens. And Mexico received even better scores from the World Economic Forum, holding “notable competitive advantages” in several areas. Beyond having sound fiscal policies and a sophisticated private sector, the 2010-2011 Global Competitiveness Report ranked the country 28th out of 139 for macroeconomic stability…..go to original article

The Gift of Time:

How to Volunteer at the

Cancer de Mama Clinic

February 4-6, 2011

©Tara A. Spears

Dealing with cancer of any type is a horrible ordeal. Being a poor woman complicates the physical aspects due to a lack of available options or assistance.  Add the cultural taboos to the situation and most Mexican breast cancer survivors withdraw from social activities for fear of standing out due to the loss of hair and a breast. For many women in Nayarit, just surviving the breast removal surgery is not enough, there is still a huge uphill battle for regaining self-esteem and feeling like a woman again. Statistics from the National Institute of Salud Publica report that breast cancer mortality has increase by 2% annually for the last 30 years, with the Mexican state of Nayarit experiencing a 300% increase in the last ten years!  There is a lack of after surgery care proved by the government for the lower socioeconomic individuals without health insurance, which is approximately 60% of the Nayarit population. The LaPenita Cancer de Mama Clinic provides a vital service to those struggling to cope with this disease.  The clinic provides more than free prosthesis and a hot meal- it welcomes clients with instant fellowship, understanding, and a chance to feel feminine again- all wrapped in smiles and hugs from the many volunteers.

In anticipation of the 400 clients that will be arriving for the annual breast cancer prosthesis clinic, the Cancer de Mama organization has kicked into high gear by organizing preparations into departments  of responsibility.  Each area of service has a chair to oversee the volunteers and get the tasks done.  Donated items can be dropped off at the La Penita RV Park office or contact the clinic co-chairs for pick up of items.  Judy:  judykrajnc@hotmail.com, Maruca: marucadinsmoor@aim.com, or Carole: carole@lapenitatrailerpark.com. Cash donations can be made through PayPal on the Jaltemba Foundation website, www.jaltembafoundation.com, or through the organization’s webpage, www.cancerdemamaclinic.com. A few hours of your time will do so much to help a breast cancer survivor begin to rebuild her life. Volunteer at the Cancer de Mama Clinic 2011 and become a part of the team that brings comfort, acceptance, and hope to those women in our community that are fighting breast cancer. Read the job description in the following list and contact the chair to get involved.

2010 Accomplishments Margarita Challenge

Education&Family Fund

               ©Tara A. Spears

Amid the preparations for this year’s fundraising event, the Margarita Education & Family Fund committee reflects on what the non-profit group accomplished with the proceeds in 2010.  The organization has sponsored the Emilio Zapata Primaria, in Guayabitos, for eight years, erecting a building that now serves as the special education classroom. Recently the school’s parent organization held a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication for the completed building. Without the annual Margarita Challenge this long term accomplishment would not have been possible. In December the school installed a permanent plaque crediting the support of the group.

Left to right:

Principal Rosa Rodriguez; Bonnie & Jim Williams, Margarita Committee chairs;

Sp. Ed teacher Marlenne Gutierrez  stand next to new plaque crediting Margarita group for donating building, purchasing teaching materials and classroom furniture for Emilio Zapata Elementary School.

“When we looked for a project eight years ago, we met with Principal Rosa Rodriguez and the parents at the elementary school.  We asked the parents to decide what was needed and wanted; the Margarita Fund pledged the financial support but we stipulated that the parents would have to be involved,” explained Jim.  “We wanted a community effort- we saw our group as mentors not bosses.”  Initially the group improved the bathrooms, replacing fixtures and plumbing, painting and tile. Next, the PTA wanted a separate building to create a school library, and a place for special needs students to have instruction.  “Through the years, Margarita Fund purchased the materials and the parents supplied the labor- look at the building now!” Jim said proudly.

2nd Annual Jaltemba Bay Rotary Club Dinner Dance

Saturday, January 22nd in La Peñita

January 2, 2011, La Peñita de Jaltemba, Nayarit -  The Second Annual Rotary Club Dinner Dance will be held at Toñita III on Saturday, January 22nd.  Featured is a delicious dinner, lively music, dancing, a silent auction, a floor show, prizes and loads of good fun.  It all starts at 6:00 pm and ends at 11:00 pm.  The ticket donation is $300 pesos per person, which includes dinner and one drink.  Tickets are on sale at:  Xaltemba Restaurant, Piña Colada Restaurant, Jafiro’s, Fitness Pad, Centro Chiropractico, Interactive Computing and from Rotary Members.  Buy your tickets early because they are hard to come by as the day of the event gets closer.

The dinner dance is Jaltemba Bay Rotary Club La Penita’s big annual fundraiser.  Donations raised at the first dinner dance were largely responsible for the realization of the club’s three big 2010 accomplishments.  The club proudly inaugurated a new kinder at the Colonia Las Cabras on March 2nd Education is a Rotary hallmark and so said Kinder La Patria behind the Pemex in Guayabitos also became a reality. Lastly, La Peñita Rotary co-partnered with Los Amigos de La Peñita, federal and municipal governments and the local Ejido on the La Peñita Beach Clean-up Project demolishing two derelict buildings on the beach, making La Peñita a more beautiful place to visit.

What does the Second Annual Dinner Dance mean to our communities?  La Peñita Rotary is the proud recipient of three 2010 Rotary grants.  The donations raised at this coming dinner dance will help fund each of the grants, soon to become our major 2011 projects.  The first grant provides for consistent water, a security fence and a safe play area for the Luis Pasteur Kinder Luis Pasteur Project.  The second grant provides for the remodeling of the Zacualpan La Preparatory High School (CBTA #107).  It is a large project with the goal of repairing the school roof, installing a new computer lab, installing a new kitchen lab and repairing a number of the classrooms.  The logistics of coordinating 12 international clubs led by Berkeley California and the local parents and craftsmen is a project in itself.  Lastly, continuing to focus on education, Kalispell Montana’s Rotary Club’s Learning for Life project (scholarship and leadership training) will be jointly managed by the La Peñita Rotary and Los Amigos Clubs as well as partnering with Chacala’s Cambiando Vidas.  Join us in making a difference in our corner of Paradise.

Club Rotario Bahía de Jaltemba meets every Wednesday from 7:30 am to 9:00 am at Piña Colada’s in Guayabitos.

Window on Marine Life: Jaltemba Bay Tide pools

                     © Tara A. Spears

One of the favorite activities along the Riviera Nayarit is strolling the gorgeous beaches. But most people stay on the sand and miss out on a remarkable phenomenon, the Pacific Ocean tide pools.  It’s worth the extra exertion to climb the rocky outcroppings at either end of the Jaltemba Bay to view the tide pools that contain a wealth of marine critters. Tide pools are a unique and brutal habitat where the ocean meets the land. This tidal zone is continually shaped by the actions of sun, wind, water, and rock. The sun bears down, heating exposed surfaces and organisms, ocean breezes blow and contribute to the wave action, erosion, and drying of exposed plants and animals; the ever changing water level requires tide pool inhabitants to have adaptive characteristics; and the rocks are etched by the force of the pounding tides constantly approaching and receding.   If you want a perfect spot to meditate or just enjoy the natural beauty of the tropical ocean, sitting beside a tide pool is a guaranteed de-stressor.

BUY LOCAL

Thanks to all of you who have responded so enthusiastically to the BUY LOCAL campaign.  We are hearing good things from shoppers and from merchants. For those of you who are newcomers, this program is designed to boost the local economy by encouraging shoppers to buy products in the Jaltemba area rather than leaving their pesos in Puerto Vallarta or some other city.  This way we help people who are our neighbours.

We're excited to let you know we now have cloth shopping bags with a great new logo and the BUY LOCAL slogan.  We will have these for sale at the Los Amigos booth at the tianguis market this Thursday.  They are 30 pesos each, 100 pesos for 4.  Think about getting at least 4 and spreading them around.  You get the advantage of cloth bags, which everyone is looking for, plus you can promote the program.

Stay tuned for follow-up news regarding weekly sales that will be offered by local stores, another reason to buy all you need here.

Barbie Angel Project - Final Update

Earlier this fall, Geri De Moss the Barbie Grandma, was worried that she would not have enough Barbies dolls to go around for the holidays.

At that time she only had a couple of hundred of Barbies. However, at the end of November, shortly after she arrived in Los Ayala, Barbies kept rolling in like pennies from heaven! The final tally was 680

Barbies. It did not top last year’s count of 835 Barbie’s but nevertheless it was plenty to be divided between all groups who asked for them.

Geri De Moss advises that they were able to provide Barbie’s to two area schools, six kinders in the La Penita area, the communities of Los Ayala, El Monteon, Guayabitos, La Penita and La Colonia, for

their holiday parties, two privately sponsored small village groups and even the ladies at La Penita Senior Center.

Geri says, “Many thanks to my wonderful crew of 18 women and two men, who spent 21 hours during seven Barbie’s dressing parties working this year here at my Los Ayala home, bathing coiffing and dressing the Barbie dolls. I couldn’t have done it without them! They certainly

brought smiles to the faces of many little girls who welcomed the dolls into their loving arms and new homes!

Calderón to Envoys: Improve Nation's Image
Lauren Villagran - Dallas Morning News

President Felipe Calderón
Share

Mexico City – Mexico needs to smooth its image abroad by emphasizing its successes in the war on drugs, its efforts to strengthen the rule of law and its improving economy, President Felipe Calderón told a group of several hundred ambassadors and consular officials.

"I'm not saying we should deny there is a problem, but it's also important for you as ambassadors and consuls to put things in perspective," Calderón said.

In the U.S., consular officials are bracing for what promises to be a tough year for migrants as rhetoric against illegal immigration grows louder.

A rash of proposals for tougher immigration laws have diminished hopes for changes in 2011 that would resolve the legal status of millions of Mexicans living in the U.S. Some analysts say Mexico's deteriorating image – the result of a four-year drug war that has left more than 30,000 dead – has helped fuel sentiment against illegal immigration.

Mexico's ambassador to the U.S., Arturo Sarukhan, told the gathering that Mexico would use "all its diplomatic resources to guarantee that, whatever the immigration status of our compatriots, they are respected."

Many Mexicans are hunkering down, especially in states where the chorus against illegal immigration is particularly strong, such as Arizona, Georgia and South Carolina , according to Clarissa Martínez De Castro, director of immigration at the Washington-based National Council of La Raza.

"The risk for immigrants and for Latinos in general is as these proposals advance, their proponents use them to stir up anti-immigrant sentiment, which creates an environment in which Latinos are regarded as suspect regardless of their status," she said.

Texas, she said, is something of a wild card.

"There are some very strident voices that are going to push very hard for some of these measures," she said. "It's going to be a real test for Texas."

The Mexican government, meanwhile, is on the defensive, given the troubles that Central American migrants face in Mexico as they work their way north.

The danger that migrants face in Mexico "complicates our argument for an immigration system that is orderly, secure, legal and respects human rights," Sarukhan said. He emphasized that in Mexico it is "organized crime" that is threatening migrants.

Mexicans living illegally in the U.S. are confronting an onslaught of proposed laws that aim to further criminalize their presence or deny their children citizenship. Several proposals follow the lead of Arizona's new law, which gives police the right to question detained people about their legal status.

At the same time, deportations are up sharply from five years ago. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reported 392,790 deportations in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, compared with 180,189 in 2005.

US Sabotages Gun Strategy in Mexico

The Los Angeles Times on Wednesday stated that a greater control of weapon sales in the United States would help Mexico in the combat against drug cartels.

In an editorial, the newspaper said that President Obama should give the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) authority to require gun dealers near Mexico to report multiple purchases of high-powered rifles.

“Mexico has some of the strictest gun laws in the hemisphere. Citizens are permitted to buy low-caliber firearms for self-protection or hunting, but only after a background check and approval by the National Defense Secretariat,” the newspaper wrote.

“The goal of this parsimonious approach to allotting firearms is a society free from gun violence,” the document stated.

“Unfortunately for Mexico, however, its weapons management strategy is sabotaged by an accident of location, being next door to the gun capital of the world,” the Los Angeles Times noted.

“The United States is awash in guns. Americans own an estimated 283 million guns, and 4.5 million new ones, including 2 million handguns, are sold each year, according to ATF,” the newspaper added.

As part of its effort to stop the flow of weapons, the ATF has asked the White House to impose more requirements to gun dealers located near the border in four states – California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

The ATF wants the approximately 8,055 weapon retailers to report any sales of two or more long rifles of .22 caliber or higher to the same customer within a five-day period.

The website for information and registration is www.aapvconvention.com.
The local Puerto Vallarta English speaking Alcoholics Anonymous Serenity Group combined with Al-Anon participation will be hosting their 9th annual "Sobriety Under the Sun" AA convention at the Krystal Resort on January 28-30, 2011. This year's theme will be "Sunlight of the Spirit". The venue was so popular last year that it was unanimously decided to hold the convention at the Krystal again. Packages for those that wish to stay at the resort are available. Expected to attend are close to 400 recovering alcoholics and Al-Anon members, most coming from the United States and Canada, along with seasonal visitors and full time local Puerto Vallarta residents. Large speaker meetings, discussion groups, workshops, dinners and social events are all planned for the event.

There will be four main speakers, three from the AA program and one from the Al-Anon program. At the door registration and the convention begins at 2 PM Friday with hourly AA and Al-Anon marathon meetings. On the opening evening there will be a welcome reception with hors d'oeuvres at 5:00 PM, followed with the opening night AA speaker, Shannon F. from Los Angeles, California at 7.00 PM. At 9:00 PM entertainment will follow with a dance with a DJ. At 10 PM there will be an open AA beach meeting and marathon meetings will also continue until midnight.

On Saturday the day will start with a sunrise open AA beach meeting at 7:00 AM and there will be ongoing marathon meetings and workshops (both AA and Al-Anon) from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM. The Al-Alanon opening speaker will be Jack C. from Sylmar, California from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM. After the speaker Al-Anon will conduct their countdown for those with the least and most time in the Al-Anon program. The sunset banquet and dinner will be at the Seven Columns Restaurant (tickets are required) with the main speaker at 8:00 PM. The main speaker will be Leslie C from Sylmar, California. Register early, as the dinner always sells out. At 9:30 entertainment will be provided by a popular Mariachi band. For those that wish there will also be an open AA beach meeting at 10:00 PM.

Saturday is the day that most workshops will be held. They include topics and facilitators. Topics will include "Sunlight of the Spirit", "Courage to Change" which is a "Double Winner" workshop for those both in AA and/or Al-Anon; both at 1:00 PM. "Pioneers in AA", A Daily Reprieve", Honesty & Recovery" are all at 2:30 PM. At 4:00 PM the workshops will include a GLBT meeting as well as a women's and men's meeting. Be sure to select which workshops you want to attend as there is something for everyone.

Sunday morning concludes the convention with another open AA beach meeting at 7:00 AM, followed by a spirituality complementary continental breakfast for all attendees at 8:00 AM. The Sunday morning AA Spiritual meeting will be at 10:00 AM, with Matt M. from Long Beach, California speaking followed by the traditional countdown of years in recovery. The convention will come to a close at noon.

For those lucky enough to be staying longer there is a "Sober Cruise" which was introduced three years ago and has become a favorite among members. This is an opportunity to spend the day at sea cruising and whale watching, then a stop at one of Banderas Bay's most beautiful beaches, unreachable by land, for an AA meeting on the beach. Breakfast and lunch are included. The cruise will be on Monday, January 31st and will depart the cruise ship terminal at 9:00 AM and return at 6:00 PM. The cost will be $40 USD at the conference registration table or $45 USD at the dock. Seating will be limited to 150, so be sure to register early and not be left ashore.

For more information and registration forms as well as a detailed schedule of events visit the convention website as well at www.aapvconvention.com and navigate easily through the site to set up your conference itinerary. With the addition of Pay Pal last year it was easier to register for the conference, the banquets, and other related convention events and to book reservations at the NH Krystal Resort.

The cost for registration is $65 USD at the door, with a $10 discount if received before December 30th or a $5 discount if received before January 22nd. Registration includes full access to all meetings and workshops but not the Saturday night buffet which has an extra cost of $30 USD.

Eight years ago, a small group of local AA members formed a convention to celebrate their sobriety and invite the rest of the world to join in the celebration. Conventions are common all over the world and the group felt that Puerto Vallarta would be an ideal destination to host a convention. The first in 2002 was actually named "Soberfest 2002" and the name was changed to "Sobriety Under the Sun" the following year and was then supported by members of the Serenity Group of Alcoholics Anonymous in Puerto Vallarta. We are now celebrating Sobriety Under the Sun for the 9th year and each year attendance has increased.

Alcoholics Anonymous was founded in 1935 by two alcoholics that found that one alcoholic can best help another after repeated trips to hospitals, jails and churches all failed in efforts to help hopeless alcoholics to stop drinking. In 1939, four years later the book Alcoholics Anonymous or the "Big Book", as it is fondly called was released in print. Only 100 recovering alcoholics were members at the time and the first 164 pages of the book have remained unchanged. Currently, millions of once suffering alcoholics worldwide are now members and enjoy freedom without alcohol, and leading productive lives. Alcoholics Anonymous is known as perhaps the greatest movement of the 20th century that helps individuals at no cost. All groups are self supporting through meeting contributions.

The 75th anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous was celebrated in San Antonio, Texas at its international convention was held on July 1st - 4th, 2010, with the theme being "A Vision for You". Upwards of 60,000 attended and flooded the city. Hotel rooms in the San Antonio area close to the convention site were sold out far in advance and rooms in the surrounding area also sold out. Many attending had to go as far as Austin for hotel accommodations. AA is currently found in almost every country in the world and the "Big Book" has been translated in almost every language.

Strange, but true, in Mexico the first group was an English speaking group formed by ex-pats in 1946, and it took ten more years before a Spanish speaking group surfaced. The success and growth in Mexico was phenomenal, currently with close to 20,000 groups in existence. According to a local AA member in Puerto Vallarta, who is anonymous in accordance with the spiritual principles of the program, the first group, named the "Serenity Group" sprung up in 1966 in Gringo Gulch and met in rotating homes. Twenty years later in October of 1986, The "Serenity Group" opened its doors on the second floor at the Cine Bahia on Insurgentes Avenue and became home to the Puerto Vallarta Alano Club in 1994. The AA Serenity Group met twice daily (9am and 6:30 pm) and then included other 12th step support groups.

In the middle of 2009, the Puerto Vallarta Alano Club after 23 years moved to its new and current location. The new facility is located at Basilio Badillo 329, just a few blocks south of the original Cine Bahia location. It is on the ground floor on the north side of Basilio Badillo and across the street from Johnny's Diner.

With the help from members of the club, which is independent of the 12 step meetings, a major reconstruction of the "New Alano Club" is proving to be one that all are enjoying. The club is independent of other businesses and has one large meeting room and two smaller comfortable meeting rooms. Improvements and upgrades have been made and most comments are that folks are very pleased. For those coming to the convention, stop by and catch a meeting at the new club. There is also a website for the Puerto Vallarta Alano Club and information for the surrounding area for 12 step meetings in English. The new website is www.recoverpv.com.

The website for information and registration is www.aapvconvention.com. From this site one can register online and choose from different packages or email for more information. Registration this year can be made easily with Pay Pal. The most important thing is that nobody makes any profits or gets paid as AA service is a major component in staying sober. Any extra monies are forwarded to AA service groups to further assist others in their recovery efforts.

The weather is generally in the high 70s to low 80's and sunny in January and dips to a frigid 62 degrees at night, thus the origination of the convention name. Most people extend their visit to a week or more to enjoy the paradise and charm of Puerto Vallarta. Come join the international group of wonderful people that have one common purpose; to get sober, stay sober and enjoy life without the use of alcohol.
