The Power of Pink: Community Turns Out to Support Walk for Marlena & Cancer de Mama

$$$ 76,450 Raised to Support

Local Breast Cancer Survivors

Tara A. Spears

The first annual walk for breast cancer was a huge success-because it was a good time for a  good purpose.  More than 300 people participated by walking from Mateja’s in Guayabitos through that town, walking through La Penita to meet another group walking from the LaPenita RV Park, that merged together to walk down the avenida to  Hinde’s Restaurant.   Chair of the committee that organized the walk, Dorothy Bell,  presented a short program thanking major donors and awarding Malena Meca and Cancer de Mama Clinic with the money raised by the event. An impromptu auction for three decorated bras donated by three lovely friends raised an additional $3,800 pesos. Live entertainment had the walkers dancing in the street while enjoying hamburgers and cold drinks under the tropical sun.  The good will and high spirits of the crowd wearing mostly pink was infectious.

What sets this rural beachside community apart from being just another party town is the tremendous support that the international visitors have for the nationals: yes, they come here for vacation, yes, they might just live here part-time, and, yes, most are retired, but as soon as there is a deserving situation, all open their hearts and their wallets to do something to help. It is astonishing to see such a high proportion of the population giving so generously to charity and to help those less fortunate.  Look behind the snapshots of the fundraising revelry to realize that all the seemingly endless partying is in fact a celebration of life and community. The Jaltemba Bay non-profit organizations have annual events to raise money that builds local schools, awards high school and university scholarships, gives medical assistance, operates year round food banks, and provides prosthesis for breast cancer survivors.  Thank you to everyone that volunteered to prepare for the walk, and thank you to everyone that participated!

Thanks from Dorothy

I'd like to thank everyone for showing up, walking and supporting Malena and Cancer de Mama. Without you, your time, energy, money, this would not be possible.

I would especially like to give thanks to a few special people who have served tirelessly to ensure that tickets were sold, signs were made, t shirts purchased and sold. Bev, Tara, Jomie, Kate, Rod, Bill, Tracy, Yvonne, Yvonne, Gail,  Gerri, Susan, Judy. Rocke, Dianne – I know I am forgetting many. Please let me know if I have forgotten someone

The businesses, and the workers and owners that have been instrumental are Hinde and Jaime's, Petra’s, Mateja's, Soleys, Talaquepaque Trailer Park, Bubis, Latitude 21, La Penita RV Park, Big little RV Park, La Casita de La Penita, Most Wanted.

Tarris, the bra/biker lady was a complete surprise. Thanks for the auction to the incredible Bobby Butler. And I forget who gave me an envelope to give CDM and Annette, Suzanne or Richard should tell me who to attribute the 960 pesos to.

Wade Sillito is a country and western entertainer and has been performing Thursday evenings at La Bubis Bar (over Cricos store) during January and February. He donated 2050 pesos that he has collected in lieu of a cover charge. He plays from about 8 to 11 Thursdays so please go out and support him.

As for the entertainment, Adan was great on the karaoke and what can I say about Robert Curiel. Thank you all. We did it. I think we live in a very special community....

The Walk started on the beach at Matejas

Why Malena and Cancer de Mama

Hundreds of people showed up to support Malena and Cancer de Mama in a walk that raised over 76,000 pesos for the two groups that were connected through that terrible disease of breast cancer.

There has been a tremendous amount written about the good works of the Cancer de Mama and its wonderful gift to Mexican women who have had breast cancer surgery. But what about Melena Meza?

What made lead organizers Dorothy Bell and Bev Heggenstaller decide to raise money for this 29 year old woman and her family?  Aren’t there more deserving people out there who need our community’s help?

Besides the fact that Malena husband, Jorge, is the brother of Hinde Horton, the owner of  one of the area’s most generous restaurants when it comes to donations, assisting people and fundraising events.

Last June Melena was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.  Although the family had IMSS Mexican Health insurance, they were informed that surgery might take up to six months.  The family decided at that time to bypass the wait and pay for the surgery.  According to Jorge, surgery and treatment costs were over 120,000 pesos.  He borrowed money from family and friends, sold off some property and spent his savings.

“We organized to walk the help a wonderful family that has given so much to our community,” Dorothy Bell said.  “We thought that if we can help Malena by raising a small portion of what they had to pay to save her life, that would be a good thing.”  Just over one third of Jorge's costs will be covered.

They were amazed at the support that the community provided. The community loves Hinde and Jaime’s family and they showed that support Tuesday.

The organizers also wanted to help the ongoing cause of Cancer de Mama that has a long history in our community.  They accomplished both.

Meanwhile Malena remains on chemo therapy now being provided by IMSS.  In an interview with the Sol, she thanked the community and said that she could not believe the generosity of so many people.

¡Olé! - Fiesta 2011 Provided It All – Fun, Food, Friends and Lots of Support for A Great Cause!
Traditional Mariachi music from Mariachi “Estrella Dos Mil”, a flock of balloons – and trays of margaritas - greeted the roughly 200 people who attended Los Amigos de La Peñita's Fiesta 2011 on Sunday, January 30 at Thomas Bartlett's internationally acclaimed estate.

In keeping with the ¡Olé! theme, guests were treated to a wide variety of Mexican tapas from a number of local restaurants: El Rodeo, El Pollito, Guty’s Palapa Restaurant, La Casita, Salvador’s, Vista Guayabitos, Tonita III and Xaltemba Restaurant and Galeria. They also snacked on cheeses from Petra’s Deli and pate from Bob Tripp. Don Pedro supplied the liquor for the open bar at cost and the beer coolers and beer came from Mateja’s. Coca Cola supplied a shade tent that was greatly appreciated as guests awaited the grand opening.

Mistress of Ceremonies Susan Cobb did a great job moving the event along and Auctioneer David Stevens kept the crowd engaged in a live auction that featured a number of great items. In addition to the live and silent auctions, guests were treated to a performance of flamenco and belly dancing by a group from Estudio de Danza Adriana Gauna and a performance by the always popular Perez Brothers. Both groups generously donated their time and talent. There was also a performance by a young Mariachi Group - Mariachi Juvenil “Campo Estrella. The new Chinese auction was a big success.

One of the highlights for the event organizers was when Los Amigos decided to give patrons an opportunity, for $3,000 pesos, to provide a one year scholarship to a student at CONALEP or La Prepatoria. An astonishing 19 people stepped forward to meet the challenge.

The fundraiser exceeded our expectations. Although final figures are still being calculated, it is expected that the event will generate net proceeds of somewhere in the order of $400,000 pesos.

We would like to thank our host, Thomas Bartlett for providing the inviting and welcoming ambience of his Hacienda La Peñita. Thanks are also due to the following special sponsors who stepped forward with generous donations to ensure that all of the monies raised at the event will go to support the work of Los Amigos:
Marco Antonio Meza Echevarria, NP # 34, Casita de la Peñita, Acero Marlboro, Bold Development, Dr. Raul Renteria Ruvalcaba, Jaltemba Jalapeño, Ken Snyder and Mary Alice Ranta, Paul and Jorlynn Saunders
- as well as a number of Special Sponsors whose chose to remain anonymous.

Our thanks also go out to all of the individuals and businesses who donated items to the live and silent auctions. To see a list of these donors, please go to:
http://www.losamigosdelapenita.com/en/fiesta11-ackknow.htm
We encourage you to support these merchants who are helping to make a difference in the community

We also owe a debt of gratitude to the businesses that served as ticket outlets:
Beach Dog Grooming and Salon, El Panorama, Fitness Pad, Hidden Paradise Real Estate, La Casita de La Peñita, Petra’s Deli, Xaltemba Restaurant and Galeria and Magical Los Ayala.

A number of media outlets have been invaluable in helping to promote not only Fiesta La Peñita but the other activities that Los Amigos has been involved in over the winter. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jaltemba Jalapeño, Jaltemba Bay Folk, Jaltemba Sol, Jaltemba Times, Jaltemba Bay Life, Magical Los Ayala and El Serape for helping us get the word out.

The Planning Committee that held it all together consisted of Ken Snyder, Nora Dixon, Helma Stewart, Maxine Zurbrigg, Robi Smallwood, Sarah Walker, and Dave Easby.

But the event would not have been possible without the Los Amigos members and other volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the event was a success, doing everything from selling tickets to monitoring the auction tables to blowing up the dozens of helium balloons and hanging the sombreros that gave the property such a festive feel. We owe a hearty thank you to the following people:
Agneta Dyck, Allyson Williams, Anne Easby, Arlene Havard, Arturo Vasquez Alvarez, Barb Steers, Bob Gibbs, Bob Tripp. Bruce Hilton, Carlos Flores, Cathy Stevens, Celia Antonia Santigo Alcantar, Cesar Samuel Santiago Diaz, Christina Stobbs, Daniel Salvador Juárez Castillo, Diana Magdalena Zepeda González, Elaine Vandenburg, Erica Santiago Joachin, Estrella Galindo, Gabriel Lara, Guillermo Daniel García Bravo, Jeanie Mintzmeyer, Joel Davalos, Johan Nielsen, John Flammang, John Zurbrigg, José Alberto Azarcón. Joyce Vanderstaat, Kate Baron, Laura Gonzalez, Lupita Cuevas de Geddes, Maricruz Ruizs, Miguel Lomeli Payan, Monserrat, Natalie West, Neida Agilar, Nelson Gothie, Pablo Doran Garibaldy, Patrick Watson, Peter Martin, Ralph Reichert, Rigoberto Lázaro Natalio, Robert Stobbs, Sandra Aline Cazares, Sandra Janeth Marentes Pérez, Sergio Harrison, Sheila Collins, Sherri Nordin, Sofia Garcia, Sue Richardson, Susan Connors, Tammy Lott, Thania Iridiane Jiménez Salas, Val Egan, Vern Porter, Victor Rodriguez, Zobeida Barrera Lozano.

And last, but certainly not least, we want to offer our heartfelt thanks to those of you who attended or made donations and showed your support for Los Amigos.

ROTARIANS JOIN PARENTS IN THE BUILDING A FUTURE FOR THE STUDENTS OF ZACAULPAN PREPA HIGH SCHOOL!

The Nayarit Coast is undergoing a dramatic economic transition.  Education is the vehicle for both youth and adults who want to participate and benefit in the transition.  Bahia de Jaltemba La Penita Rotary Club’s goal is to improve schools.  The La Penita

Club is uniting with the Berkeley and Middletown California Rotary Clubs in the renovation of the Zacualpan La Prepa high school.  Berkeley Rotary has a long experience in the area, having built educational facilities throughout the village of Chacala.  Rotarian Pate Thomson says, “The Berkeley Rotary Club looks for projects with a future’.  He adds, “The goal of improving a physical structure is to help it become organic and self-sustaining, with people in it”.  The Zacualpan Prepa high school project is the perfect fit.  Working together on a project:` Rotarians, local craftsmen, volunteers from the community, visitors and businesses are the catalyst, the jump start.  Upon completion of the project, the parents, teachers and students will organize and carry the project forward, shaping the process to their needs, reaping the benefits.

Jaltemba Bay La Penita Rotary Club is kicking off Phase II of the project this week.   Twelve cooperating Rotary Clubs from California have conducted many fundraisers to raise over $80,000.00USD.  The money will be used to build a new computer lab, a new training kitchen, install a new roof and improve a number of classrooms.  While Berkeley and Middletown Rotary Clubs have raised the majority of the money, ten other California clubs are cooperating as well.  Those clubs are El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Pinole, Richmond, San Pablo, South Ukiah, Fort Bragg, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa West, St. Helena and Clearlake.  The twelve clubs are bringing more than forty club members, who will work along-side locals, sharing both the sweat of their labor and finding more commonality than differences.  Phase II follows Phase I done in last October by Kansas City Rotary Clubs:  Shawnee and Sunshine.  Rotary clubs are joining hands across the border to give the children of coast of Nayarit a future!

Capomo: Good Cheer from the Gods

Share

Jose Lorenzo Garcia and I set off midmorning to collect Capomo (Brosimum Alicastrum) Moraceae seeds. We walked for about thirty minutes, before we reached an area of Jose's land, called Habita, high in the dry forest of Cabo Corrientes.

There we found a tall Capomo tree at the foot of a steep bank covered with a variety of veining flora. Around the base of the tree and beyond we collected the Capomo nut or seed, which is the size of a round grape, some with green skin dotted with tiny bubbling dots and others a smooth brown having been denuded by the bats the night before.

The bats love the fruit, so they eat the thin-skinned fruit off the seed and then drop it for us to collect. Thoughtful of them... thus we don't have to climb the 120 feet up the tree to collect the fruit.

Mexicana Flights Return to Vallarta in May

January 29, 2011

Mexicana Airlines, which suspended all flights in August 2010 under bankruptcy proceedings, will return to Puerto Vallarta's sky in May 2011, according to Deputy Transportation Secretary Humberto Trevino, who is close to the negotiations.

Mexicana Airlines will emerge from bankruptcy as a much smaller entity thanks to bankruptcy negotiations spearheaded by Gerardo Badin. Avianca will operate the company domestically while American Airlines continues its marketing agreements overseas.

Mexicana Airlines will fly a fleet of nine Airbus A319 and A320 planes. According to Mexican authorities, ticket sales for the union owned airline are expected to begin February 20 if all goes according to plan.

Impact To Puerto Vallarta's Airport

Puerto Vallarta's airport is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP). Miguel Gargollo asserted that, while still in business, Mexicana Airlines accounted for 18% of GAP's passenger traffic to its 12 airports located in Mexico's Northwest.

After Mexicana Airlines bankruptcy announcement, GAP had forecasted a reduction in passenger GAP's traffic. Instead, GAP closed 2010 with a 5.6% increase in passengers thanks to the new flights by other carriers which picked up of about 30% of Mexicana Airlines' lost passenger traffic.

Planned Flight Schedules

Initially, Mexicana Airlines will start operations with domestic flights to Mexico City, Cancun and Guadalajara. International flights will include Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami and New York.

Subsequently Mexicana Airlines plans to expand its domestic flights to Monterrey, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Puerto Vallarta and Tuxtla Gutierrez. International flights will increase to Bogota, Guatemala, El Salvador, Havana, Costa Rica, Orlando, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary in Canada.

GAP, and Puerto Vallarta, expect a slow recovery of traffic to its airports during 2011 as a result of the emergence of the new Mexicana Airlines.

The article makes a detailed description of the history and geography of the almost 200 miles of coastline that comprise Riviera Nayarit, which have earned this destination the nickname of Mexico's Pacific Treasure.

Riviera Nayarit The author mentioned the luxury in Punta Mita, the hotels in Nuevo Vallarta, the strong support being received in Litibu and the growing developments at Flamingos, as well as the small coastal towns and its noteworthy features, including surf at Sayulita, art in San Pancho, the quiet haven of Lo de Marcos and the colorful Rincon de Guayabitos.

"Whether at sea or on land, Riviera Nayarit has a little bit of everything to indulge every visitor (...) and even if you've already visited this destination, as I have, it's always wise to keep an eye open for development opportunities", she concludes.

The intense promotional agenda for Riviera Nayarit is reflected on publications that recognize this emerging touristic destination at the beginning of this 2011.

Toniná   ¨House of rocks¨

Photography by Bill and dot Bell

Located in Chiapas Mexico and near Palenque, Toniná may have been built as early as 350 A.D. but one of its distinctions is having the last recorded date of the Maya long count.

The building technique here is interesting for the use of small rocks verses the larger type stones of the other nearby sites.

One of the features at the ruins at Toniná is its maze-like building of rooms. It is the number of rooms and the buildings position with the night heavens that help the archeologists determine the building´s function.

Toniná was a separate dynastic center and has the prized distinction of
defeating Palenque in war as well as the capture and ten year humiliation of Pakal´s son King Kan-Xul, the younger brother of Chan-Bahlum. A frieze shows the captured king Kan-Xul with a rope around his arm sitting in the pose of the captured.

This is a great site for taking your time to study the details of the different friezes and the stories they tell. A sarcophagus is carved out of one large stone on the third tier of this site. The missing carved lid probably told the story of the entombed.

An Update on the Los Amigos Education Committee

The Education Committee of Los Amigos recently completed its eighth building and maintenance project, and two other are well underway.  All this, in the less than two years that have passed since it’s inception in February, 2009.

The projects are spread across all neighbourhoods of La Peñita and La Colonia.  Some of them involve the construction on whole new kinders – La Patria, Las Cabras, Las Rosas and Luis Pasteur.  Others involve simple tasks like repairing the entry cupola at  Guadalupe Manautou Kinder or the bathrooms at Juan Escutia or the wall at Justo Sierra.    The project at J. Cruz Bautista in

volved raising the grade of the school yard so children can get to the bathroom without wading through 12 inches of water during the rainy season and the addition of a second bathroom.  And one, the repair of the wall at Plan De Ayala Secondaria, was even approved on an emergency basis: a wall was about to collapse and was a danger to students and teachers.

But, beyond bricks and mortar, the initiative also has another more lasting benefit. It has empowered parents by not only having them set the priorities in terms of funding but also by assisting them to initiate their own funding activities – including the annual Gran Bazar.  Each year, in January, the Committee initiates a process which invites schools in La Peñita and La Colonia to both participate in the work of the Committee and to submit projects for consideration for funding.  The Committee then prioritizes the

projects through a process which involves the Parent's Council, as well the Director (or a representative), from each school.  The parents are also required to contribute 20% of the cost of each project themselves by undertaking fundraising activities and providing volunteer labour.  Local businesses also contribute supplies.

So how can you help to keep this going – and support this hard working group of parents?

On Sunday, January 30, from 1:00-5:00, Los Amigos will be holding Fiesta 2011 at the award-winning Thomas Bartlett Estate.  Tickets will be available at the Los Amigos kiosk at the Tianguis every Thursday.  As well, on Sunday, January 23, you can get not only your ticket but a signed and numbered limit edition print of the Olé! Poster designed by Sarah Walker at the Xaltemba Galeria – from 6:00 to 8:00.  Tickets purchased at the Xaltemba can be bought with a credit card.  You can get more info on the Fiesta – including a list of other places to buy tickets at:
