Just a thought about Charity Events

The busy season of Charity Events is nearly at an end and for those of us who try to participate in as many as we can…well we’re exhausted.

We do indeed have a wonderful and generous community but this year it was all too evident that someone wasn’t looking at the calendar. The Jaltemba Cup and the Amigos de la Penita were held on the same day, as was the Horseshoe Tournament and Amigos de lo de Marcos. And for those of us that wanted to work at the Cancer Clinic…well something had to give. Holding two or three major events on the same day is crazy.

For those that argue that you have to strike while the iron is hot are missing an important fact. Many of our tourists come here simply to attend these events. Perhaps by extending the charity event 2 week madhouse, we can extend our tourist season and help the locals out even more.

Tula

Photography by Bill and Dot Bell

tula2.jpg (36030 bytes)Tula was the capital city of the Toltec Indian Empire. The ruins can still be found forty miles northwest of present day Mexico City which is located on the northern edge of Mesoamerica. It is situated in the Mexican state of Hidalgo and is placed near the modern town of Tula de Allende. The area is in the Valley of Aahuac or what is now called the Valley of Mexico. It is one of the most arid regions where little can be grown, with the exception of maguey, an intrinsic supplier of needles, sap and other products used by the Toltecs. In addition, the city is located on a natural promontory with steep slopes surrounding the city on three sides. continued

Thanking All Fashion Show Guests and Volunteers                                 © Tara A. Spears
The Women to Women 2011 Fashion Show is a wrap, and now it’s time to bask in the afterglow. Thank you to the 300 guests that attended the event- and had a good time in spite of a few snags in the production. The original outfits were inspiring, the food delicious, and wasn’t it fun to have a day out with your friends? The Fashion Show committee deeply appreciates the generosity for all of those who participated in the raffles, auction, and scholarship pledge drive: your financial support will have a long lasting impact on the future of this rural Mexican community. And you all looked so beautiful in your outfits! All proceeds from the Fashion Show will support the Cancer de Mama Clinic and provide scholarships for local students who would otherwise not be able to attend university- what a tremendous outcome from a day of enjoying friends, food, and fashion. The Women to Women Fund first-ever scholarship pledge drive was a huge success, providing money solely for additional scholarships.

Hugs Make the Difference

At Cancer de Mama Clinic          2011

 © Tara A. Spears

The sky was a gloomy gray and the temperature dipped to a record low on the Jaltemba Bay coast the first week-end in February, but the mood at the Cancer de Mama Clinic was upbeat, underscored with hope and compassion as the volunteers in cheerful pink shared smiles and hugs with the hundreds of women from throughout Nayarit. Many of the women traveled for hours by bus to receive assistance at the annual breast cancer clinic.  The statistics are impressive: 342 women clients were given 380 medical prosthesis; 341 prosthetic bras; 191 prosthetic tab bras; 739 regular bras, and 73 wigs for chemo patients.  The clinic welcomes the clients with cheerful banners and comforting smiles from the volunteers hoping to ease the women’s fears, at least for a few hours.  By having to deal with a long term illness such as breast cancer, many of the women lose the support of their family and friends and are having to cope by themselves. “We at the clinic become their family,” said Judy Krajnc, co-chair of the Cancer de Mama Clinic group. The Cancer de Mama Clinic’s success can be measured by the friendships, smiles, and hugs of all the participants. ...Go to Page 4 for complete article

San Pancho Children Celebrate the Beat

San Francisco, Nayarit - Over one hundred third, fourth and fifth- grade students are developing pride, confidence and work ethic through Celebrate the Beat, a dance program that expanded from Punta de Mita schools to the primary school in San Pancho last week.

Professional dancers, choreographers, musicians, and composers from Colorado based Celebrate the Beat Foundation (CTB) have partnered with PEACE, a local non-profit, to provide the program.

Teachers from CTB believe that integrated arts programs create physical and mental strength that manifests itself in the classroom. The group has traveled around the US and Mexico to share their program with grade-school children.

"CTB not only increases confidence, teamwork, and self-expression, but it also increases attendance," said Nova Pennison, Director of Casa Comunidad, the education program at PEACE. "It’s a positive outlet for their energy."

$125 allows a child to be sponsored in the program for one year. For more information about sponsoring a child, please contact becci(at)peacemexico.org.

Celebrate The Beat (CTB) is a not-for-profit Colorado-based organization. Their mission is to teach inspirational music and dance classes that help children discover their potential by motivating them to believe in themselves, to value artistic expression, and to develop a personal standard of excellence; to use dance as the medium to teach children a valuable life lesson: that energy, discipline, hard work, commitment, and joyful.

PEACE, (Protection, Education, Animals, Culture, Environment) established in 2005, is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization made up of three main programs which focus on education, animal well-being, and environmental protection in the Bay of Banderas, Nayarit, Mexico. PEACE works hand-in-hand with communities in Mexico to provide holistic education, combined with community action programs that enable people to improve their quality of life as well as their financial stability.

What is so special about Los Ayala?

It's the paradisaical splendor of the palm fringed beach and the striking beauty of the lush jungle clad mountains as they struggle to meet the sea; bearing a strong resemblance to Ecuador.

It is the abundance and variety of the surrounding nature. Los Ayala is lush and green and adorned with soaring palm trees and an abundance of colossal banana trees... Flocks of green Mexican parrotlets sing gloriously sweet as they soar overhead in the immense blue sky.

It is the shy "Mexican Chachalacas" that hang about in the trees near my house and in the summer who, on occasion, when it is really quiet, can be seen walking down the street. The Grey hawks and frigate birds who seemingly own the sky and the gregarious brown pelicans who hang out at the beach. Coatimundi, rabbits, and at least one Grey fox are also commonly spotted in the neighborhood where I live. More common are goats who manage to escape their confines every few days and roam our streets. The goats are charming and serve to provide great weed control; and on occasion a "Keep Fit" program for me when they start straying from the weeds and chowing down on my plants, forcing me to chase them away.

Los Ayala is special because of the myriad of fascinating insects that are abundant, lulling me to sleep every night. I have a love-hate relationship with these critters which include enormous lime green crickets, elephant beetles, bees the size of my thumb that roar like a 747; and tiny emerald green bees which look like jewelery...

Los Ayala's star filled sky is dominated by a moon that is immense and surely larger than anywhere else in the universe.

However, what makes Los Ayala truly special is that it is a small town, filled with good-hearted, friendly people with an immense community spirit, and having a strong, spirited mayor who cares! It is the spontaneity and exuberance of the fiestas and events. It is the way the local people befriend their international neighbors and welcome them into the Mexican culture and festivities.

Here in Los Ayala, you truly get the feeling, as author Alex Kerekes writes " We are all connected."

The Power of Pink: Community Turns Out to Support Walk for Marlena & Cancer de Mama

$$$ 76,450 Raised to Support

Local Breast Cancer Survivors

Tara A. Spears

The first annual walk for breast cancer was a huge success-because it was a good time for a  good purpose.  More than 300 people participated by walking from Mateja’s in Guayabitos through that town, walking through La Penita to meet another group walking from the LaPenita RV Park, that merged together to walk down the avenida to  Hinde’s Restaurant.   Chair of the committee that organized the walk, Dorothy Bell,  presented a short program thanking major donors and awarding Malena Meca and Cancer de Mama Clinic with the money raised by the event. An impromptu auction for three decorated bras donated by three lovely friends raised an additional $3,800 pesos. Live entertainment had the walkers dancing in the street while enjoying hamburgers and cold drinks under the tropical sun.  The good will and high spirits of the crowd wearing mostly pink was infectious.

What sets this rural beachside community apart from being just another party town is the tremendous support that the international visitors have for the nationals: yes, they come here for vacation, yes, they might just live here part-time, and, yes, most are retired, but as soon as there is a deserving situation, all open their hearts and their wallets to do something to help. It is astonishing to see such a high proportion of the population giving so generously to charity and to help those less fortunate.  Look behind the snapshots of the fundraising revelry to realize that all the seemingly endless partying is in fact a celebration of life and community. The Jaltemba Bay non-profit organizations have annual events to raise money that builds local schools, awards high school and university scholarships, gives medical assistance, operates year round food banks, and provides prosthesis for breast cancer survivors.  Thank you to everyone that volunteered to prepare for the walk, and thank you to everyone that participated!

Thanks from Dorothy

I'd like to thank everyone for showing up, walking and supporting Malena and Cancer de Mama. Without you, your time, energy, money, this would not be possible.

I would especially like to give thanks to a few special people who have served tirelessly to ensure that tickets were sold, signs were made, t shirts purchased and sold. Bev, Tara, Jomie, Kate, Rod, Bill, Tracy, Yvonne, Yvonne, Gail,  Gerri, Susan, Judy. Rocke, Dianne – I know I am forgetting many. Please let me know if I have forgotten someone

The businesses, and the workers and owners that have been instrumental are Hinde and Jaime's, Petra’s, Mateja's, Soleys, Talaquepaque Trailer Park, Bubis, Latitude 21, La Penita RV Park, Big little RV Park, La Casita de La Penita, Most Wanted.

Tarris, the bra/biker lady was a complete surprise. Thanks for the auction to the incredible Bobby Butler. And I forget who gave me an envelope to give CDM and Annette, Suzanne or Richard should tell me who to attribute the 960 pesos to.

Wade Sillito is a country and western entertainer and has been performing Thursday evenings at La Bubis Bar (over Cricos store) during January and February. He donated 2050 pesos that he has collected in lieu of a cover charge. He plays from about 8 to 11 Thursdays so please go out and support him.

As for the entertainment, Adan was great on the karaoke and what can I say about Robert Curiel. Thank you all. We did it. I think we live in a very special community....

The Walk started on the beach at Matejas

Why Malena and Cancer de Mama

Hundreds of people showed up to support Malena and Cancer de Mama in a walk that raised over 76,000 pesos for the two groups that were connected through that terrible disease of breast cancer.

There has been a tremendous amount written about the good works of the Cancer de Mama and its wonderful gift to Mexican women who have had breast cancer surgery. But what about Melena Meza?

What made lead organizers Dorothy Bell and Bev Heggenstaller decide to raise money for this 29 year old woman and her family?  Aren’t there more deserving people out there who need our community’s help?

Besides the fact that Malena husband, Jorge, is the brother of Hinde Horton, the owner of  one of the area’s most generous restaurants when it comes to donations, assisting people and fundraising events.

Last June Melena was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer.  Although the family had IMSS Mexican Health insurance, they were informed that surgery might take up to six months.  The family decided at that time to bypass the wait and pay for the surgery.  According to Jorge, surgery and treatment costs were over 120,000 pesos.  He borrowed money from family and friends, sold off some property and spent his savings.

“We organized to walk the help a wonderful family that has given so much to our community,” Dorothy Bell said.  “We thought that if we can help Malena by raising a small portion of what they had to pay to save her life, that would be a good thing.”  Just over one third of Jorge's costs will be covered.

They were amazed at the support that the community provided. The community loves Hinde and Jaime’s family and they showed that support Tuesday.

The organizers also wanted to help the ongoing cause of Cancer de Mama that has a long history in our community.  They accomplished both.

Meanwhile Malena remains on chemo therapy now being provided by IMSS.  In an interview with the Sol, she thanked the community and said that she could not believe the generosity of so many people.

ROTARIANS JOIN PARENTS IN THE BUILDING A FUTURE FOR THE STUDENTS OF ZACAULPAN PREPA HIGH SCHOOL!

The Nayarit Coast is undergoing a dramatic economic transition.  Education is the vehicle for both youth and adults who want to participate and benefit in the transition.  Bahia de Jaltemba La Penita Rotary Club’s goal is to improve schools.  The La Penita

Club is uniting with the Berkeley and Middletown California Rotary Clubs in the renovation of the Zacualpan La Prepa high school.  Berkeley Rotary has a long experience in the area, having built educational facilities throughout the village of Chacala.  Rotarian Pate Thomson says, “The Berkeley Rotary Club looks for projects with a future’.  He adds, “The goal of improving a physical structure is to help it become organic and self-sustaining, with people in it”.  The Zacualpan Prepa high school project is the perfect fit.  Working together on a project:` Rotarians, local craftsmen, volunteers from the community, visitors and businesses are the catalyst, the jump start.  Upon completion of the project, the parents, teachers and students will organize and carry the project forward, shaping the process to their needs, reaping the benefits.

Jaltemba Bay La Penita Rotary Club is kicking off Phase II of the project this week.   Twelve cooperating Rotary Clubs from California have conducted many fundraisers to raise over $80,000.00USD.  The money will be used to build a new computer lab, a new training kitchen, install a new roof and improve a number of classrooms.  While Berkeley and Middletown Rotary Clubs have raised the majority of the money, ten other California clubs are cooperating as well.  Those clubs are El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Pinole, Richmond, San Pablo, South Ukiah, Fort Bragg, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa West, St. Helena and Clearlake.  The twelve clubs are bringing more than forty club members, who will work along-side locals, sharing both the sweat of their labor and finding more commonality than differences.  Phase II follows Phase I done in last October by Kansas City Rotary Clubs:  Shawnee and Sunshine.  Rotary clubs are joining hands across the border to give the children of coast of Nayarit a future!
